Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 2026 NFL Draft Preview
How They Got Here
The 2024 Buccaneers won the NFC South at 10-7 and beat the Eagles in the wild card before falling to Washington. Mayfield was a revelation (28 TDs, 10 INTs, 97.2 rating), and the defense, led by David and White, was stingy in the red zone. Then came 2025: David retired after 13 seasons, White was traded to Denver for cap relief, and the defense collapsed. Tampa Bay allowed 27.1 PPG (25th in the NFL) and couldn't stop the run. Mayfield's regression coincided with the defensive decline — he was asked to do too much and pressed, leading to turnovers. The offensive line, solid in 2024, regressed without LT Tristan Wirfs (traded to the Jets in March 2025 for picks). Mike Evans, now 33, had his worst season (712 yards) since his rookie year.
Team Needs
Tampa Bay picks at #15 after a disappointing 7-10 season that ended the Baker Mayfield magic. Mayfield regressed badly in Year 2 (21 TDs, 16 INTs, 82.4 rating), and the defense that carried Tampa Bay to the playoffs in 2024 fell apart without Lavonte David (retired) and Devin White (traded). Todd Bowles remains as head coach, but the seat is warm. The Bucs need defensive playmakers to return to contention.
Draft Outlook
Bowles needs defenders. The interior defensive line was gashed all season, and the safety position was a disaster without a true playmaker. Kayden McDonald (DT) would anchor the defensive line and allow Bowles' blitzes to work again. Dillon Thieneman (S) would add a ball-hawking presence the secondary desperately needs. On offense, Emmanuel Pregnon (OG) would help rebuild the offensive line that lost Wirfs. Bowles' scheme requires specific personnel — this pick needs to fit it.
Top Prospect Fits
1. Kayden McDonald
A broad-framed run stuffer who overwhelms with power. At 6-3, 310 lbs, McDonald would anchor Tampa Bay's interior and allow Todd Bowles' blitz packages to function again. He posted 42 tackles and 4 sacks in 2025 while commanding double teams on 40% of snaps. The Bucs were gashed up the middle all year — McDonald fixes that. Odds: +175 to go #15 (favorite).
2. Dillon Thieneman
An instinctive ball-finder who attacks in coverage. At 6-0, 210 lbs, Thieneman's range and football IQ would immediately upgrade Tampa Bay's secondary. He had 4 interceptions and 8 passes defended in 2025. The safety position was a revolving door all season — Thieneman would lock it down. Odds: +200 to go #15.
3. Emmanuel Pregnon
An ultra-physical guard with a nasty temperament who sets the tone. At 6-4, 330 lbs, Pregnon's power and movement skills would help rebuild the interior line that lost continuity when Wirfs was traded. If Tampa Bay goes offense, he's the pick. Odds: +275 to go #15.
4. T.J. Parker
A high-motor edge rusher with heavy hands. At 6-4, 255 lbs, Parker's relentless effort fits Bowles' aggressive scheme. The edge rush production declined without complementary interior pressure — Parker plus McDonald would be an ideal pairing if both somehow fall here. Odds: +350 to go #15.
Draft Strategy
Todd Bowles' job depends on fixing the defense. The 2025 collapse was directly attributable to losing Lavonte David and Devin White without adequate replacements. McDonald or Thieneman should be the pick — both fill desperate needs and fit Bowles' scheme. The offensive line is a concern (the Wirfs trade hurt), but defense is the identity. Get playmakers on that side of the ball, hope Mayfield bounces back, and compete in a winnable NFC South.
Betting Analysis
The #15 pick market is fairly open. Kayden McDonald leads at +175 as the DT option. Dillon Thieneman (+200) is the safety play. Emmanuel Pregnon (+275) addresses the offensive line. The Bucs are +150 to draft a defensive player in Round 1, reflecting Bowles' defensive-first philosophy. McDonald at +175 makes schematic sense — a space-eating interior defender would allow the edge rushers to operate. Thieneman at +200 offers value if the secondary need is deemed more pressing. Tampa Bay is unlikely to trade up (-300 to stay at #15) but could trade down if no clear target is available.
